Bios for the Board of Deacons

Wai Chun Yiu

Wai has been a dedicated member of Joy Church for 15 years, actively serving/served in various ministries, including the Children’s Ministry, the Welcoming Teams, Small Group as both a leader and huddle lead. He has also provided support for retreats and served in the Trailer Crew. Professionally, he is a clinical research scientist at Johnson & Johnson, where he contributes to meaningful advancements in healthcare. Married to Emily for 19 years, they have three sons—Jayden, Reuben, and Cooper—who keep their lives filled with joy and adventure.

A lover of the outdoors, Wai enjoys camping, fishing, and any activity that allows him to connect with nature. He’s also passionate about woodworking, gardening, chickens, and maintaining both marine and freshwater aquariums. Most importantly, he cherishes quality time with Emily and the boys, making memories together as a family.

As he looks to the future, Wai hopes to help Joy Church reach more people for God in Bergen County, bringing a message of hope and community to others.

Francis Kim

Hello! We have been coming to Joy for the past 7 years after settling down in North Jersey. My wife, Jiwon, and I are blessed to have a wonderful 6-year-old daughter, Hailee. I work as an interventional cardiologist and my current hobbies include being involved in an intense book club and running (although I like cycling better). I eventually would love to get back to my other loves of golf and wood working.

I currently serve as a Small Group leader and am also involved in the Welcoming Ministry and Early Morning Prayer. My hopes for Joy in this next season revolve around discipleship and knowledge. I have been so blessed by my brothers and sisters at Joy who I can look up to in mentorship and accountability. I pray that Joy will continue to be a church that promotes and strengthens discipleship. I also believe that Joy is unique in its vast resources of knowledge from our pastoral staff and hope that we will continue to grow in knowledge of God through His special revelation through Scripture. I love “Joy is possible” and truly believe in it. I would love to get to know you if I don’t know you yet!

Jane Lee

Jane has been with JOY for 10 years, married for 22 years to her devoted husband, James Lee, together raising their three kids – Connor (19), Sophie (15), and Vivienne (13).

Jane is a wedding and event florist. She enjoys traveling & learning about new cultures, going on dates with James, and spending quality time with her kids. She also values moments with good friends and her newest hobby is learning how to take care of her plant babies.

Jane currently leads the Connections Ministry and serves as a Chosen Generation (youth group) class parent. She has previously served as the leader of the Welcome Ministry, a small group leader, a youth group teacher, and a JoyKids parent-teacher liaison.

"In this upcoming season, I hope for JOY to continue being a welcoming community, filled with His love and grace, motivating us to be mission-minded in our interactions—within our families, our neighborhoods, and our workplaces—stepping outside our comfort zones to share our faith."

Eliza Choo

I’ve been an active member of JOY since the fall of 2001, serving in various ministries across all four NJ campuses (Englewood x2, Tenafly, and Edgewater), including worship (2001-present), TLC/small group (2010-2012), and the Missions Executive Team (2008-2015; 2017-present). During the pandemic, I was a member of the Nehemiah Task Force for our church's COVID response and the Church Health Team focused on Joy's spiritual health and growth.

After my years in Boston and Chicago for school, missions abroad, and various jobs, I've found myself working at the same investment management firm in Midtown East for the past 15 years. In my spare time, I enjoy running, hiking, traveling, cheering the Yankees, reading, and spending quality time with family and friends.

As a deacon (ordained in 2016), I’ve participated in several pastoral search committees and led the Elder Nominating Committee and process for our second cohort of elders. In this next season, I hope for Joy to experience a spiritual awakening that fosters a deeper love for God and our community, both inside and outside our walls

Christine Chun

I have attended Joy since 2012 and became a member in 2013. I am very blessed by my loving, encouraging family: my husband Tom of 27 years, and our three children, Carolyn (24), Johnny (18), and Danny (14). I am a stay-at-home mom and over the years have enjoyed volunteering for my town, school, and church communities. Prior to moving to NJ, I worked as an attorney for seven years in NYC. I love traveling with my family, arranging flowers, gardening and playing sports.

I currently serve at Joy in the Connections Ministry, and have previously served in the Women’s Ministry, Connections Ministry and as a Small Group leader.  My hope for Joy is that we will spur each other on, united and intimately connected as brothers and sisters in Christ, and, that together, we will glorify God and share with the world our church vision…that Joy is possible!

Jacob Chung

I’ve been at Joy since 2003, met my lovely wife Min there in 2008, and became father to our amazing twins, Raphael and Emmanuelle, in 2013. I work as an ophthalmologist in Tenafly and love the eye and all things related to it.

I currently play drums on our Worship Team and lead a men’s Small Group; but in an era of Joy long past, I led worship and TLCs and partook in the now-defunct and very punny ministries Rejoyce! (newsletter) and Rejoysing (acapella group).

My hope for Joy in this next season is to see our hunger for something greater increase, that we and the community around us will taste and see that the Lord is good.

George Pak

I have been with JOY since 2000 (24+ years). I am married to Yourim (Allison) Pak since 2001 and have 2 teenage boys, Daniel (17) and Joshua (16). I work in finance (regulatory reporting) and my hobbies include spending time with family, traveling, singing (alone in my car), camping and playing video games (RPG).

I currently serve in our Early Morning Prayer team and have served in various ministries in the past, including Small Groups, Children’s, Treasury, Missions, Welcoming, Choir (yes, JOY had one 20+ years ago!), Boards, Search Committees, etc.

I hope that JOY will continue to be a community that loves Jesus and encourages/challenges its members to fully experience the joy and freedom that can only come from Him.

Jin Cho

I’ve attended Joy for 23 years. I’m married to my wife Brenda and have twin boys (Thomas & Jonathan) and daughter Katie. I am a project manager for JP Morgan.

I have been serving as a deacon (since 2016), on the SOC and as a Small Group leader.

My hope is that Joy will be the light and the salt of the earth in Bergen County / NY metro area.

Janice Yoon

Janice Yoon Choi has been at JOY since 2010, starting at Joy Manhattan, and joining Joy Englewood in 2013. She and her husband, Paul, delight in raising their two boys, Joshua (11) and Josiah (4). Emerging from a season of being a stay-at-home mom, Janice serves as Deputy Director of Reah International, a Christian non-profit that equips and empowers the global Body to engage the people of North Korea. She is also a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). For fun, she enjoys feasting with family and friends, traveling, making handicrafts, playing piano, and watching baseball (#21 J. Choi fan, and a Mets fan by marriage).

At JOY, Janice has been a Small Group leader and Worship Team member; she currently serves as a member of the Missions Executive Team (MET) and the Intercessory Prayer (IP) core team.

Her hopes for JOY in this next season is embodied in Romans 15:13 -- that we would be a fountain of Christ's joy, peace, and hope, so filled by Him as we trust in Him, and empowered by the Holy Spirit that we would freely overflow with His love through our church, into our communities, and to the ends of the earth.

Scott Yoon

I have been attending Joy since 2003, where I also met my wife, Christine. Together, we are raising our three kids—Derek, Vivian, and Evan—along with our family dog, Bowie. I work at Johnson & Johnson MedTech as a manager overseeing a software engineering team and a Business Excellence (BEx) team.

In my free time, I enjoy woodworking, particularly creating furniture and gifts. My most recent and sizable project was a solid walnut dining table, measuring 9 x 4.5 feet and weighing over 350 pounds. It has become a gathering place for my family and for hosting neighbors and Joy events. I also enjoy coaching my sons’ recreational soccer teams, watching them and their friends grow as players and build friendships.

Over my 21 years at Joy, I’ve served in various roles, including choir—yes, we had a choir back then!—praise band, Treasury, SOC, TLC/Small Group leader, Paterson Block Party coordinator, and Welcoming Ministry. I believe God has been equipping Joy with everything we need to preach the gospel and save souls on a scale and with an urgency I can’t fully grasp yet. I believe He will accomplish this in ways that clearly show it’s His work through imperfect people like me and others.

More specifically, I feel called to help equip Joy with the organizational maturity and capabilities needed to fulfill God’s mission for us. I’m hopeful that God will lead us forward, shepherding us along the way.

Do Yon Hwang

Do Yon Hwang has been a JOY member since 2011 and was ordained a deacon in 2016. She has served in numerous committees and ministries in varying capacities and roles and still finds joy in serving. Do Yon is the Curriculum Coordinator at Hawthorne Christian Academy where her two sons Alex and Edward attend school. She is married to Pastor Kevin, her soulmate! She is passionate about her life motto, ”Be the Light!”

Her hope for JOY is that in the next season Joy will shine the light of Christ in Northern New Jersey and beyond! She prays Joy, grounded in the gospel, will continue to bear the Fruit of the Spirit that will endure to the glory of the One who was, is, and is to come!

Min-Hee Cho

I’ve been attending Joy since 2008 when our family moved to New Jersey from Connecticut. I’m married to Jin Ha Joung whom I met back in dental school. I have three daughters, Emma (20), Sophie (17), Natalie (14) and a son, Matthew (12). We have a beautiful Goldendoodle named Nala (4). I’m a dentist and my hobby is gardening, organizing, cleaning, and crafting.

Over the years at Joy, I have served/serving as a small group leader with my husband; a member of BTS (Beautification Team of Sisters)  for many years; a Joy Toddler teacher for 5 years; and now a Joy Kids teacher, teaching 3rd graders; and a Parent Teacher Liaison for 3 years now.

My hope for our church is to truly find Joy in all circumstances and to be unified as one body as we come together in faith in Jesus Christ no matter how different we all are.
